IIT JEE was introduced in 1960 as a common examination to allow admissions in various IITs. Earlier, IIT in Kharagpur had admitted students based on their academic performance. Examination pattern of IIT JEE was also different. Questions were subjective and objective. Later, in 2002, AIEEE was first introduced. But due to growing competition, the dwindling admissions and fear in minds of students, voices were raised in order to streamline the examination. Then finally for the concerns of students, the examinations were clubbed together. Hence, AIEEE became JEE Mains and IIT JEE became JEE Advanced.
